Folklore on the danube 11-17-12

A boutique tour in Northern Bulgaria and along the Danube with an emphasis on local folklore, wine, music, dance and the Koledari ceremonies that take place from December until February to welcome the New Year and wake up Mother Earth, We will meet with musicians, culture and history - a vast ethnic and human experience, going back to the roots. We will take part in a local Koledari song competition in the city of Silistra, on the border with Romania. All along the tour, we will have dance workshops accompanied by Dilyana Kurdova, a doctoral student in ethnochoreology and a teacher in Bulgarian and Greek folklore dances.

Itinerary
Day 1 the Rose Valley
After arrival in Sofia and a good breakfast, we go to the Rose Valley at the foot of the Balkan Mountains and stay in the charming town of Kalofer. After resting, we begin our journey in the Bulgarian and Balkan folklore. Dilyana Kurdova and Nikolay will teach us the first steps in dance (suitable for all) and will demonstrate the different styles of Bulgarian folklore. We will visit the home of the national poet Botev, meet with the local treasures – the grannies and their cozy homes. Overnight cucovata house kalofer

 

2 the Balkan
In the morning we will continue with Bulgarian folklore workshop by Dilyana and Nicolay at the local community center. In this day we will visit the Rose valley, where most of the rose oil worldwide is grown, and continue to the nearby town of Kazanlak visiting sacred sites, mysterious pyramids and meet local artists in the different villages. Day 3 Pleven
in this day we will cross the Balkan ridge through a beautiful mountain pass and visit the monastery of Trojan, one of Bulgaria's most important cultural and art treasures. We will continue to the city of Pleven, which preserves ancient traditions of music and folklore. This is undisputedly one of the most beautiful parts of Bulgaria. We will tour the fascinating city, meet with local ensembles, learn about the mysteries of the Bulgarian voice and traditional instruments. Overnight Pleven rostov hotel.

 

 

 

4 Bulgarian Danube
In this day we will journey along the Danube, which is the natural border between Bulgaria and Romania. We will visit Bulgarian ports and historical cites while continuing towards Silistra where there was an important Jewish community and the grave of Eliezer Papo. We will take part in a Koledari singing competition and also other cultural activities along the following two days at various venues. Overnight Silistra drastar hotel

 

Day 5 Silistra
We will visit the city of Silistra and the surrounding area, take a short cruise on the Danube (if possible). We continue taking part in the Koldari events, meeting with local residents. Dilyana will give another seminar on Bulgarian folklore and dance, including a lecture and presentation on ancient traditions, costumes and customs. Overnight Silistra drastar hotel

 

Day 6 the mysterious Bulgaria
in this day we will discover sites of the ancient Thracians and learn more about their spiritual teachings developed in Bulgaria. We will start at sveshtari (world heritage site) seeing the statues of the dancing women, continue on to the Madara horse carved in rock cliff at a sacred spot and arrive in the evening to Varna, the Black Sea region. Varna is not only casino and hotels, but also a place of folklore, heritage and fascinating history. We will see it from another point of view. Accommodation in Varna. 
 

Day 7 the Black Sea.
A full day of sightseeing. Discover the mysterious site near Varna and the Black Sea coast, where there are standing stone columns, antique gold, the oldest gold in the world, meet with local musicians and dancers, get to know the folklore of this area, visit the local museum and dinner. After dinner, we fly to Sofia
